AAHA Accredited Take a tour of our state-of-the-art office building

The animal hospital that feels like home!

Dr. PAWS, Inc. was established in 1999 to increase the level of Veterinary Medicine and Care in Northeastern Pennsylvania. We strive to be professional and provide a relaxed atmosphere for our patients and clients. We are very proud members of theĀ American Animal Hospital Association and theĀ Better Business Bureau.

As an Accredited Practice with AAHA, we regularly have our practice evaluated by an expert to ensure that we comply with over 900 of the highest standards in veterinary care. You can be sure your pet is receiving the best possible care. Only 14% of all practices in the United States are recognized and accredited by AAHA. We are the only AAHA Accredited practice in NEPA.

The BBB is an organization which strives of ethical business practice. Dr. PAWS is very proud to be the 2006 Runner-up, BBB Northeastern PA Torch Award in Business Excellence.

Our philosophy was not to be trendy. Providing patient comfort and personal care is our goal, not trying to be all things to all clients. In keeping with this, Dr. PAWS was strictly designed for practicing a high level of medicine. Boarding and grooming services undermines patient care and leads to noise, confusion and stress. We desire to keep the front office calm, relaxing and running efficiently. Cleanliness, quietness, and calmness are much easier to accomplish with fewer pets on any given day. We will continue to provide the highest quality of Veterinary care that the market area can support.

Take a peek at our beautiful, state of the art office!

Our Office - Reception

The reception offers a colorful focal point of grandness. It is spacious enough to allow 2 to 4 staff members room to use 2 computer work stations without crowding. Two leash hooks mount to the reception desk to allow secure tethering of rambunctious dogs, thus enabling clients a safe and expedient checkout process.

Our Office - Over the Counter

Food and over the counter items are secured behind the desk within easy reach for dispensing. Medical record folders are filed out of view between the front and back office, yet remain easily accessible to both reception and technical staff.

Our Office

The floor to ceiling windows, framed in solid oak, create a sense of openness, sunlight and airiness. Gold-toned recessed lighting further enhances the warmth of the room. The ceiling is of drywall construction to reduce the appearance of a commercial facility. Porcelain tile floors facilitate traction for dogs with nervous footing and the scale set into the floor surface reduces their anxiety while getting weighed. A handicapped restroom off to the side includes a janitor closet for easy access to clean-up equipment. A separate door leading to the back of the hospital allows easy access for surgery patient drop-off and pick-up.

The Building Site - External Layout

The external layout of the property offered a framework which kindled Dr. Sperling's innovative ideas for the internal design of the hospital. Decorative masonry block and stucco provided a solid foundation for the fifteen year old, well-constructed building. The front of the building is landscaped with perennial flowers and greenery showcasing floor to ceiling windows.

The Building Site - Lighting

Uplighting makes the front of the building especially inviting at night while traditional lighting secures the premises.

Pharmacy Area

The pharmacy has cabinetry with window inserts which makes finding medications easier for dispensing. Drawers are used on the pharmacy side instead of cupboards and provide ample organized storage of additional pharmaceuticals. A computer workstation is integrated with the pharmacy and is in close proximity to the dog exam rooms. The pharmacy label maker, integrated with all computers, is located on this counter where all medications are dispensed. Under cabinet fluorescent lighting in the lab/pharmacy area adds extra workspace brightness.

Laboratory Area

The laboratory area is divided into two sections. There is a separate counter designated for the microscope station. The spaciousness of this area enables traffic flow to circumvent the station and allows the viewer an undisturbed study. The second section contains the blood chemistry, cbc analyzer, centrifuges and computer station. There is ample counter space which enables segregation of multiple blood tests insuring accuracy.

Kitty Ward / Food Prep / Laundry Area

The design of this room was to reduce visual clutter of the necessary food pre-op/laundry area. There are six kitty cages for surgery/hospital patients. The washer and dryer provide a lull of comfort in this private area away from dogs.

Kitty Ward / Food Prep / Laundry Area

A small raised tub with hand-held spray provides just enough space for necessary bathing and litter-box cleaning. This room is adjacent to the surgery room. Post operative patients are observable via floor to ceiling window that separates this room from the surgery room.

Dog Ward / Recovery Ward

Just as the kitty area is enclosed with glass, likewise is the dog recovery area. With three extra large cages on the bottom layer and four medium cages on the upper level, only absorbent Steriolon (synthetic lambswool) is used to line the cages and newspaper liners are avoided. The remaining upper tier space is a finished Formica counter surface used for storage of overstock items. Dr. Sperling avoided the common mistake of having a third tier of cages, elevated too high for proper care and observation.

Radiology Area

The radiology room has lead lined walls and is spaciously designed to allow gurney access for easy transport of surgical/anesthetized patients. The room is large enough to accommodate ultrasound and is internet-ready for tele-medicine. The dark room, just off to the side, is equipped with an automatic processor and shared space with the chest freezer. This provides a counter top surface used during developing of radiographs.

Isolation Ward

This small ward, in a separate area provides a facility that works with negative pressure ventilation. It provides two medium and one large cage for potentially contagious patients. It has a windowed door to allow quick visibility. It is easily accessible to the treatment area for necessary medical supplies. The counter surface doubles as an exam table. This ward is directly across from the break room that contains a separate cleanup sink which is used to prevent cross contamination. Parvo cases are within earshot of the staff lounge where a technician offering overnight care would be staying.

Dog Runs

A separate back room with a solid door has four individually drained runs. this ward, purposely set in the far corner of the hospital is useful for extra noisy and extra large dogs. this room also doubles as a storage room and has janitor equipment for cleanup in the back part of the hospital. As is consistent throughout the wards, this area has separate ventilation for expedient odor removal.

Office

The office is located off the pharmacy/lab area and provides for instant access for staff members. The location gives David the ability to monitor the activities in this central work area. From here, he can provide quick assistance when necessary, lending an extra hand when all hands are busy. Though this office is not designed specifically for Dr. Sperling and staff veterinarians, it does afford them private space when needed. There is an additional desk, a computer station and reference books in this room.

Breakroom

The break room in the northeast corner of the hospital provides the staff with a kitchen/living room complete with shower. In the event of an overnight stay for an ICU patient, there is a futon couch that provides comfortable rest when needed. Carpeting is used instead of epoxy flooring to give a feel and comfort of home. There is a staff restroom is located just off to the side. This room also houses all the electrical and phone systems along with hot water heater behind closed doors.

Waiting Room

The waiting room was designed to combine usefulness with a flare of uniqueness while providing a safety and comfort for patients, clients and staff. Having two double door entrances on opposite sides permit dogs and cats the ability to enter into their own waiting areas.

Waiting Room - Aquarium

A custom designed reef aquarium, especially vibrant in the evening hours, cleverly divides this large open space. Peering from all sides into a 75-gallon salt-water tank, children can have a personal visit with Nemo, the clown fish, while their parents are soothed by the peaceful flow of a variety of aquatic life.

Exam Rooms

From the waiting room, patients can enter three exams rooms, two on one side for dogs and one on the opposite side for cats/exotics. The dog exam rooms are large enough to accommodate families with multiple pets. Both have lift tables with scales and are covered with an easy to clean rubber mat to reduce the feeling of coolness and slipperiness. Oak benches, built off the ground, allow for ease of sweeping and mopping. Adequate counter spaces are computer ready if expansion is desired. White cabinetry, located through out the entire hospital, is useful for overstock items.

Exam Rooms - Decorations

The walls are decorated with collages of family pet photos of Dr. Sperling's patients from the past 15 years and give clients a bit of peaceful down time if they are waiting for test results during their pet's exam. Upper cabinetry has been avoided to help keep the room feeling spacious and once again, artwork is used in place of posters. Brushed stainless doorplates offer protection from dogs scratching the solid core oak doors which are used throughout the hospital.

Kitty Exam Room

The kitty exam room is designed a little differently. Dr. Sperling chose a counter top exam table knowing how comfortable cats are on counters. She embellished the room by having a window for cats to be distracted, along with a birdcage of zebra finches to provide live entertainment for kitties and clients.

Exam Room

Each exam room uses oak chair railing to offset two-tone, semi-gloss wall paint. All of the exam rooms have bents to provide quick relief of odors and are equipped with sinks and central vacuum dustpans to aid in fast removal of hair and dirt. They also have separate thermostats to individualize temperature control. White epoxy flooring with sprinkles of peach and teal were chosen to bring the color scheme together from room to room. This flooring flows through the entire back of the hospital. It is easy to clean, prevents absorption of odors and stains and always retains its polished appearance.

Lab / Pharmacy / Treatment Area

All three exam rooms and the front desk area lead into the expansive work area that is the center of operations. Dr. Sperling designed this open space to be completely accessible and visible to all hospital activities. Separate function compact refrigerators are positioned under the counters on both lab and pharmacy sides. There are three computer / phone workstations all integrated with the pharmacy label printer and lab equipment to allow for paperless transactions of medical records.

Treatment Area

The treatment area is a continuation of the lab/pharmacy area. These stations consolidate into one large workroom. From the lab/phoarmacy area it is easy for staff to see when extra assistance might be needed to for patent treatments. This area doubles as the surgical prep / dentistry area by using a standard size surgery-lift table equipped with wheels. The table can be stored partially under the counter when not in use. It can easily be maneuvered through the hospital and is beneficial for moving painful, weight patients for x-rays. Anesthetized patients are wheeled from surgery prep to surgery, then to recovery, all with minimal stress on staff and patient.

Surgery Room

Two very important features were considered in the layout of the surgery room. Large tempered glass windows enclose two sides of the room which allow visual access of recovering and hospital patients, and an extra wide doorway facilitates patient movement on gurney. In addition, the layout and the size of the room make it extremely manageable.

Surgery Room - AAHA Specifications

The surgery was designed to meet AAHA specifications. Mechanically, it contains a HEPA filter system that allows for positive pressure ventilation. The ceiling is of drywall construction to eliminate dust accumulation. As is consistent throughout the hospital, this room is fitted with under counter lighting and central vacuum dustpan for easy cleanup. Counter space and cabinetry beset wall-space on either side of the hydraulic lift surgery table making this room self-sufficient and user friendly.
